Celebrating InsideOut

Meeting my need for belonging

In a world of constant connectivity, it’s all too easy to get swept up in endless scrolling and curated perfection. InsideOut Intelligence (IOI) invites us to pause and reflect on what truly nourishes us—not just during the holidays but throughout life. This season offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with our 9 core human needs of Affection, Belonging, Creativity, Freedom, Identity, Leisure, Safety, Subsistence, and Understanding. When we align our celebrations with these essential needs, the holidays become a time of fulfillment, joy, and meaningful connection.

I remember a particular holiday when my family found ourselves overwhelmed by the usual rush of wish lists and last-minute shopping. We were chasing the perfect gifts, but something felt off—until my husband, with his playful sense of humor, wrapped random household items for the adults. That Christmas, we laughed harder than we had in years. The simplicity and spontaneity of the moment fulfilled something far deeper than any expensive gift could. It reminded us of the true essence of the season: Affection shared through laughter, Belonging felt around the family table, and the Freedom to let go of expectations.

What freedom during the holidays looks like.

The holidays also invite us to reflect on the Three Core Desires that drive so much of our lives as humans: Freedom, Growth, and Joy. As I consider past seasons, I realize the most treasured memories were those that offered these intangible gifts. Freedom came from unstructured days spent lounging in pajamas. Growth emerged through traditions like baking recipes passed down through generations. And Joy? It lived in every shared story, every burst of laughter, every quiet moment by the fire.

One year, we decided to focus on creating memories instead of accumulating things. We planned a family hike in the crisp winter air, bundled up in scarves and mittens. We walked slowly, savouring the beauty around us, our hearts full from just being together. That day met so many needs: Creativity in planning something special, Leisure in the peaceful walk, Belonging in the familiar warmth of loved ones nearby.

These experiences taught me that meaningful holidays aren’t about extravagant gifts but about fulfilling our deepest needs in simple, profound ways. I’ve learned to ask myself, "How can I offer Affection, Belonging, or Leisure to my loved ones?" or "What gifts inspire Freedom, Growth, or Joy?" Giving doesn’t have to mean buying—it can mean creating space for fulfilling moments.

The holidays are a season of stories—the ones we tell, the ones we live, and the ones we create together. This year let’s write a story of connection, presence, and authentic joy. Let’s focus on what truly matters and celebrate from the inside out, guided by the needs and desires that make life richer and more meaningful.

May your season be filled with Affection and Belonging, and with the Freedom, Growth and Joy of truly celebrating, from the inside out.
